Prior to joining up, William Angus was a professional footballer. He played with Carluke Rovers FC, and in 1911 was signed by Glasgow Celtic, the premier Scottish football club of that time.

He played with Celtic FC during seasons 1912-13 and 1913-14.

After his return from the war, he was often invited to major football matches as guest of honour.

He became President of Carluke Rovers FC, and retained that position until his death.
