William Angus VC
photographed with Lord Newlands and Lt Martin at Carluke railway station on his arrival home.
In deference to the VC hero, both men have
removed their own medals, including Lt Martin's Military Cross,
awarded for gallantry a few weeks prior to his rescue by Angus.
Over Lord Newlands' right shoulder is Mr
George Angus, the hero's father. He had travelled to London to join
the vast crowd watching at Buckingham Palace as the King
presented the VC. On hearing that he was present, the King ordered
him to be found and brought to join them for the presentation.
